Supositories usually work quite quickly:
- Typical: within 15–30 minutes
- Sometimes: up to 1 hour
- It’s sensible to stay near a toilet after inserting one.
- Try to keep it in for at least 15–20 minutes if possible, rather than going immediately when you first feel an urge.
They work locally by drawing water into the bowel and stimulating the rectum, so they're mainly useful when stool is sitting low down in the rectum.

Check the blister is not broken before use. If it is, do not use that suppository.
Wash hands thoroughly before and after inserting the suppository. Remove the protective film. Moisten the suppository with water and insert deep into the rectum.
Adults and the elderly: Gently insert one moistened suppository deep into the rectum as required.
Use only in the rectum. Do not swallow the suppository. Do not use for children or infants.
If anyone accidentally swallows a suppository: Talk to a pharmacist or doctor.
